WH&Y Chief Investigator Professor Fiona Brooks passed away on 13 January 2023, after a short illness. As a friend and colleague, Fiona will be sadly missed.

Fiona Brooks is Associate Dean (Research) at the University of Technology, Sydney. Her work seeks to challenge a deficit approach to young people’s health by examining and demonstrating how protective health assets may operate to support and build capacity and capabilities for young people. Fiona has been an expert advisor to the UK Cabinet Office, Public Health England and the Department of Health on adolescent health, and she has considerable experience of working with policy makers and NGOs in relation to knowledge translation.

Fiona has published widely on topics relating to young people’s health and wellbeing including work on assets for vulnerable youth, self-harm, participation in physical activity, computer game playing, violence and body image. She is a Chief Investigator on the longest running cross national study in the area of adolescent health, the World Health Organisation Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC). This international cross sectional study takes place in 49 countries and is concerned with the social determinants of young people’s health and wellbeing. Fiona has been involved in the development and validation of new measures for self-harm, and experiences of health service use.  

Fiona will take a key role in Policy & Practice. She will also bring specific expertise in youth engagement.
